The first three of them – Bodhgaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar – are among the four sacred sites of Buddhism. Bodhgaya is the place where Prince Siddhartha after years of spiritual practice, attained enlightenment and became Buddha. The Mahabodhi Temple complex with the descendant of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment, is the top attraction here. Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first sermon and the Stupa Dhamek Sarnath museum and its main attraction while Kushinagar, where Buddha breathed his last, was the Temple Mahaparinirvana its main attraction.
Ladakh has a good percentage of the Buddhist population and therefore offers an opportunity to interact with people. In addition, a number of monasteries dot the land of striking beauty, the most famous among them is the Hemis monastery. An annual festival is celebrated in the precincts of Hemis which attracts many visitors both from India and abroad.
Dharamsala offers refuge to a number of Tibetans. The Dalai Lama settled here after the Chinese invasion of Tibet forced him to leave the country with thousands of his supporters. Dharamsala is a wonderful place snacks travelers want to know more about the Tibetan form of Buddhism. Tibetan form of Buddhism can also be seen in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. In the first case, the Rumtek Dharma Chakra Monastery Tawang Monastery and the latter are fairly well known.
Ajanta and Ellora are located in Maharashtra and is a World Heritage site. The caves are fine examples of architecture Buddhist. Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh, too, are designated World Heritage Sites. Nalanda was once the most academic renowned the world.
For the landing of foreign travelers to Mumbai or Chennai airport, it is good to begin their journey to explore the Buddhist Ajanta Ellora caves. It may be followed by a visit to Sanchi, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Bodhgaya, Nalanda, Dharamsala and Ladakh (not strictly in that order). Visits of Arunachal and Sikkim may come at the end of the trip. Those landing at the airport to Delhi or Calcutta can explore Sanchi, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Bodhgaya, Nalanda, Dharamsala, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim (not strictly in that order) first, then proceed towards Ajanta Ellora Caves.
This is a travel plan based on the location of sites. However, the actual terms of passengers must take into account many other factors such as climate and present situations. It's a good idea to visit one of these at a time when a Buddhist festival is celebrated there.
