What will you do differently to make this year better than last year?
Newspapers are going out of business on a daily basis. Television advertisers are leaving in droves. The radio stations are forced to layoff employees because of declining revenues.
Back in the early 90s, the economy was experiencing a recession, the media have been extremely affected by the USA Today, TV Cable and more targeted advertising. I decided to move to the marketing of a commercial printing company in disseminating consumer and in the process learned that wrestling and NASCAR were many target audiences for products companies.
I knew it There was no way I can convince the Council to let me spend the advertising budget on the fight so that left NASCAR. This decision has evolved into sponsoring a race team. This has caused a stir in the organization because I spent money on a race team when the organization went through cuts and shortened workweeks. Immediately after hearing the first rumblings of problems, I explained that spending on the race team has been made to increase our branding and exposure in an effort to increase sales and get everyone back to work.
It worked. They bought into the idea and have become big supporters of the effort.
In 1993 I spent $ 500,000 on our NASCAR Busch team and we won the championship. Following our efforts, the company received $ 1,000,000 worth of exposure to television and print coverage that important and incredible teamwork in the organization. It did not increase our brand and helped us to gain ground with some large accounts. I also think it was a key ingredient in the growth of the device reached 60% while working with this company.
Today, as then, Traditional media is undergoing significant changes. This is evident by lower revenue from traditional media. At the same time, there is a path that keeps and to grow as Web 2.0. This is past a new arena for marketers and there is little to follow, but this uncertainty is a tremendous opportunity.
